Not every breast change means cancer—but it's always worth checking. Breast cancer doesn’t always show symptoms at first, but being aware of the most common early warning signs can make a major difference in early detection and treatment success.
If you notice something unusual, don’t wait. Even if it turns out to be nothing, seeing your doctor ensures peace of mind.
Most people associate breast cancer with a lump—and for good reason. While not all lumps are cancerous, any new lump or mass in your breast or armpit should be checked by a doctor. Some may be cysts or benign tissue, but others require follow-up imaging or biopsy.
Breast size can naturally change due to age, pregnancy, or weight fluctuation. However, sudden or uneven changes in shape, swelling, or contour should be evaluated, especially if only one breast is affected.
Pay attention to dimpling (like the skin of an orange), redness, flaking, or thickened skin on your breast. These symptoms can sometimes resemble a rash or infection but may also be signs of inflammatory breast cancer, an aggressive form that requires immediate care.
Breast pain is often hormonal—but pain that doesn’t go away or has no clear cause could be a sign of something more serious. If the discomfort is localized or worsens over time, schedule an evaluation.
Watch for discharge that is bloody, clear, or occurs without squeezing. Also look for nipple inversion (turning inward), tenderness, or changes in direction. These symptoms can be linked to breast cancer and should not be ignored.
Not every symptom leads to a cancer diagnosis—but staying vigilant is key. Early detection improves treatment options and outcomes. You don’t need to panic over every lump or twinge, but if a change lasts more than a few days or gets worse, reach out to your provider.
